Mon, 13 October 2008 In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine poled a select group of 172 musicians, critics and industry figures to compile the 500 greatest songs of all time. Not all of these songs were hit singles, and a high percentage were released in the 50s, 60s and 70s. I have collected the top 100 songs from this list, and in this program, songs 100-76 are played. The remaining 75 songs will be published in three upcoming programs. Enjoy! Comments[17] |
Wed, 3 September 2008 Labor Day: The traditional end of summer; and the start of school. Those first few days and weeks of schools were always fun; old friends, new friends, football games; and, lots of great music. I worked my way through the 60s and came up with some great "Back to School" musical memories. Enjoy! Comments[8] |
Fri, 22 August 2008 Starched shirts, skinny ties and lapels, and a stiff glass of mid-morning scotch! That's the profile of Don Draper -- mad man. Here's some music reminiscent of the times in which the characters from TV's best show -- "Mad Men" -- thrived. Light up a lucky and have a ball, gang! Comments[6] |
Tue, 12 August 2008 Its still summer, and I'm still enjoying listening my favorite summer oldies. Here's another batch. I'm afraid the program runs more than an hour and a half, though. I just couldn't stop. Enjoy!! Comments[6] |
Thu, 10 July 2008 Did you miss me?! We cruised the Mediterranean during much of June. Great time and great weather. But, it was sure nice getting home. Roaming around out in the sun reminded me of tons of summertime hits, and I just had to compile a bunch of my favorites once I finally got back home. Here's the result. See if this show doesn't remind you of how great it was to have a summer vacation from school! BTW: I'm really sorry about the glitch in the last show. I was shocked to see only a minute thirty was posted on the server. The problem has been corrected, so, if you haven't checked out the Top 50 Hits of the '50s yet, get on it! Comments[7] |
Tue, 3 June 2008 Man! I sure had fun compiling these two episodes. Hope you enjoy 'em as much as I did. Here's the Top 25 Hits of the 50s. Dig it! Comments[6] |
Wed, 28 May 2008 I've had the good fortune to add several "new" oldies to my record collection recently. Many of these songs are from the dawn of rock, and I thought this might be a good time to create my own, personal, Top 50 Hits of the '50s. These selections have some grounding in reality, but they were made by me, for me. No whining! Here's Volume 1: Songs 50 thru 26. Comments[5] |
Sun, 11 May 2008 One hundred and fifty years after the War of 1812 ended, the British again invaded the USA. This time it was an army of musicians, and they captured the country's rock and roll heart. I know America invented Rock 'n Roll, along with Soul, Doo Wop, Rock-a-billy and Beach Music. But the folks from England had a great sound. Take a listen. I know you'll remember most of 'em. Comments[10] |
Thu, 8 May 2008 Even though I still think '66 had the best music of the decade, 1965 was rockin'! I tried pulling together 20 tunes from that year, but I couldn't stop until I had assembled 31 songs; and I wouldn't have stopped there except for server limits. Enjoy this one, gang. Comments[7] |
Mon, 21 April 2008 I was in college during the late 60s and enjoyed the introduction of, what was called at the time as, "psychedelic" music into main stream rock 'n roll. But, just because a band was "heavy" didn't mean it wouldn't be a one hit wonder. Iron Butterfly's In-A-Godda-Da-Vida was the first album ever to hit Platinum status. But two years later, the band was on a downward spiral and played a few songs at my fraternity party at the Holiday Inn at which the band was staying. The tunes themselves were terrific; and lots of popular songs were not Heavy. Here's a collection of some of my favorites from that era. Enjoy! Comments[8] |
Thu, 17 April 2008 I graduated from college in '72 and finally made it to California in 1974. It sure wasn't quite the way I had imagined it: The water was cold, as were the summers -- altho I did manage to go surfing once in December. That was sweet. But the music -- Fantastic. Here's a collection of mid 70s tunes I created last week that I figured you folks would like. Enjoy! Comments[6] |
Tue, 8 April 2008 Man!! There were sure a lot of great songs in the '60s. I can't begin to play even a small portion of them in an hour long program. I just gotta keep trying. Here's volume 2. Enjoy! Comments[7] |
Mon, 24 March 2008 1963 to 1967: My high school years. With a couple of notable exceptions, it wasn't the best time of my life. But the music -- it was outta sight!! I'm assembling a few hours of my favorite tunes from that era. Here's volume 1. Enjoy! Comments[10] |
Fri, 14 March 2008 1963: year 1 BB (before Beatles). California music; the Polish prince. Great tunes and great memories. Here's a few of my favorites from that year. Enjoy! Comments[12] |
Fri, 29 February 2008 My pal Chip graduated from high school in 1960. He started playing the guitar then and loves that old time rock and roll. When Diane and I go out dancing with Chip and his wife, he and I love to see who is smarter on 50's music trivia. I figured an hour's worth of tunes from Chip's high school years might be fun for him -- and everyone. Enjoy! Comments[7] |
Tue, 26 February 2008 Diane and I saw one of the touring Beatlemania shows a couple of weeks ago, and, ever since, I've been listening to Beatles songs while driving around the Island. I figured: If I love this music, maybe some of my tens of listeners will too, So, here is an hour's worth of some of my favorite Beatles songs. Enjoy! Comments[6] |

Tue, 15 January 2008 Diane is an afficionado of all musical genres. But, she came of age in the early '70s, so hits from that era have a special place in her heart. This podcast is especially for her, but I'm sure there are lots of listeners that will really like hearing some '70s tunes! Comments[6] |
Mon, 31 December 2007 Carolina Beach Music: So fine, how could it be wrong? From the dance clubs in Virginia Beach and along the Carolina coast, beach music has enjoyed a huge following. I love it; and, I'll do a "Volume 2" if I get any positive feedback. Enjoy Comments[5] |
Wed, 12 December 2007 As a way of fueling individuals' memories, I've thought it would be fun to create a series of time piece, rock and roll snapshot podcasts. This first entry focuses on the top 40 hits of summertime 1966 -- an era which I think had some of the best music ever. Enjoy! Comments[7] |

Fri, 9 November 2007 My friend Al came of age in the late 50's, and he loves that old time rock 'n roll -- especially Buddy Holly and some of the gang out of Sun Records.
